Product Review: Magpul D60

Oct 9, 2021

Product Introduction

From Magpul Industries comes one of the highest capacity magazines available, the PMAG D-60. Overall it is an impressive competitor, boasting a long list of traits and features:

  • Next-generation impact and crush resistant polymer construction
  • All components are corrosion resistant
  • Bolt hold open feature to lock the bolt back on the last round
  • Will seat fully loaded on a closed bolt
  • Ratcheting Loading Lever takes tension off the spring for easy loading by hand
  • Feed Tower is compatible with most loading devices, including USGI stripper clips and guides, the Strip and others
  • Designed to be left loaded for long term storage with no degradation of function
  • Anti-glare translucent window on rear of drum allows for easy determination of rounds remaining
  • Paint pen dot matrix panel on back of body to allow for identification marking

In short the D-60 answers a few important questions: "How do I get more ammo capacity? How can I reload my rifle less often? What if I need more bullets?" A drum mag in general packs a larger amount of ammunition, reduces the number of times you might need to reload, and it gives you more time shooting targets.

And now ladies and gentlemen, we present to you the Magpul PMAG D-60.  Well-- Magpul does anyways. Spoiler alert: This video keeps reminding me how badly I want to get an FFL 07 and become and SOT to get some belt fed action in my life.

Our Experience

First off, I want to say that i have been excited to do a review on this product. I have tried a variety of high capacity mags and Drum mags have always had that "Cool Factor" to them. And to combine that style with Magpul's skill merits the need to try it out.

Magpul D-60 at Gun Guys

My first impressions as I grabbed the D-60 our of my order was how dense it feels. The box is sturdy and has good packing design as well. As a dealer for Magpul it doesnt take up a ton of shelf space, and would be very easy to throw it into a safe back in the corner. Anyways, I opened it up and it took out the mag, and just looking at it you can tell its a quality product. Not random jagged edges from molding and the way its put together it has been designed to hold together well even under stress. The window on it to see how many rounds are left is very easy to see through and seems to be just as durable as the rest of the heavy duty polymer parts.

I took it out to my little shooting spot and started to loaf it up. The loading assist lever made it pretty easy, and it could feed from stripper clips with the attachments it can use. It loads just like a normal AR-15 magazine for the most part though, so no need to worry there. After i put about 40rds into it, I decided that was a good enough start to just start shooting with it!  all 40 rounds fed with no issues. I loaded it up to the full 60rds and again went the the whole mag without issues. I Also noticed there wasnt much wiggling or loose rattling when it clicks into my White Label Armory lower or my PSA or Anderson ARs. It fits pretty well and with its wieght it slid right out on empty. It didnt require any fitting of any kind, so id say its dimensions are spot on.  And it looks awesome too. It is a great addition to my kit.

With it working so flawlessly I really didnt have much more to say.  I did take it apart to see how complicated the inner workings might be and it actually has a design that is easy to understand. It was easy to clean out and get it all ready to load up and store in the safe for emergencies. As I looked at the Magpul product page for it it made me wonder if they would ever make an FDE drum. I would 100% copy the AR set-up they have below and put an FDE drum on it if they ever release the other color options.

Gun Guy’s Score

  • Fun / Useful:      5 /5
For sure! This was some of the most fun ive ever had! Combo this with a Franklin Armory Binary trigger and its awesome! Definite 5/5

  • Quality / Design: 5 /5
Magpul always has well engineered mags and this one follows suit. Solid material, good spring tension, and built to last. The lever to help load it makes it pretty easy to load. 5/5

  • Reliability / Function:  5 /5
I was very impressed with how well this drum works. No malfunctions so far. Once i can buy some larger Bulk boxes of ammo I want to test with a few more brands of ammo. I tried Wolf, PMC and some Magtech ammo and it worked like a charm. 5 out of 5

  • Value:  4.5 /5
I broke my own rules and give this a 4.5/5. (I might have to give out more partial stars). Its definitely a quality product. The pricing is fair for sure. I just wish they were a tiny bit cheaper. HOWEVER, im glad they didnt cut any corners. The overall price / round count is the only reason i took off half a star here. 4.5 out of 5.

Would I Recommend it?

YES!  would Highly recommend this item for anyone looking for a truly reliable drum mag. All of the engineering that went into this product puts it above many high capacity magazine options. It performed well and its not priced that much higher than its competitors. If you want quality and ease of use the Magpul D60 is one of our favorites.   Although there are some other magazines that have a higher capacity, many of the other brands might require graphite lubricant and extra care. The Magpul D-60 is definitely a great choice for those who just want to load a mag and rest assured it will work.

The KCI MAG AR-15 5.56 100RD DRUM has been a fun range mag, but you have to follow the manuals instructions and apply the lubricant (which for me really isnt a problem but we have had a few customers who didnt enjoy that process).

If you want some lower cost options we also have had great luck with the ATI S60 SCHMEISSER 60-ROUNDS using brass cased ammo. And our 3rd similar item is also from magpul and woul be the most cost efficient way to carry some extra ammo in your AR.

The PMAG 40 AR-15 Mag holds 40rds and is usually just over $20 so you can grab a 4 or 5 of these for the price of the D-60.

There are many options to stay in your budget as well as get the highest quality drum!
