What Ammo should I Buy?

03/15/2023

If you are curious about what kind of ammo to buy, here is a really brief answer to your question: Get a variety of ammo. You want FMJs, and a few Hollowpoints. And here is why:

The best type of ammo for target practice can depend on a few factors, such as the type of firearm being used, personal preference, and the range regulations. However, there are some general guidelines to consider.

For handgun target practice, full metal jacket (FMJ) ammunition is often a good choice. FMJ ammo is typically less expensive than other types of ammo, and it's commonly used for target practice because its availablility and price point. Additionally, FMJ ammo is often one of the most realiable designs. Some guns tend to be more finicky when you use hollowpoints or if you have a more rare style of projectile, but FMJ is pretty much the standard.

For rifle target practice, similar to handguns, FMJ ammunition is often a good choice for target practice. It would be the most bang for you buck but it is fairly basic in performance. you can get more niche or increase performance with other style of projectiles.

However, some shooters prefer soft point (SP) or hollow point (HP) ammunition for a more realistic shooting experience. SP can some times perform better for certain rifles. It could be something to do with rifling or specific calibers but we have had some customers say their groups are better with a Soft Point bullet. HP ammunition is really made to transfer more energy into the target and expand upon impact. That hollowed end helps them be more effective for hunting or self-defense scenarios. They often cost more than an FMJ bullet but then again the purpsoe behind the design justifies the extra cost. So, I often buy a variety of FMjs for the range or practice, a couple boxes of target ammo that might be marketed as an accurate bullet with a soft point, and a few smaller boxes of hollow-points to carry.

It's important to always check the range rules and regulations before selecting ammunition for target practice. I used to often buy the Russian-imported ammo like Wolf or Barnaul, and they were once the most affordable ammo you could get, but some ranges didnt allow them. Some were made with components that would damage steel targets or cause sparks so lots of ranges prefer you use a lead core bullet.

Additionally, it's a good idea to test different types of ammunition to find the type that works best for you and your firearm. I tend to buy a few boxes from various manufacturers to test which ammo brands or loads work best in each firearm. I have been surprised how many times one bullet from "X" brand works well in some guns but not in others, or round nose versus hollow points.
